The Kids Off the Streets Project started in Fishermead in Milton Keynes in 2003 by Michelle Barrows who wanted to give the children activities on her estate to stop them being latch key kids and roaming the streets.
Michelle obtained funding from a number of sources employing The Ice Gems to do cheerleading, MK Dons to run football classes and MK Lions for basket ball, She also ran a number of fun days in the parks in her area.
Unfortunatly the project in this form collapsed due to insufficent support and Michelle falling pregnant. The Ice Gems were so impressed by what they had seen they took over the administration and work that the project was doing. The project has since ran under their direction since, however they now have extended their remitt and offer children a variety of activities which they are encouraged to fundraise for themselves. The project has been so successful they have now extended into Bedford and Aylesbury.
